Secret of happiness is not experiences, material goods or personal philosophy.
Instead, the secret to being happy is much simpler and surprising even who have lived for years.
Neuroscientist Professor Moran Cerf of Northwestern University has been studying decision-making for more than a decade.
According to the teacher, it is important to stop wasting our energy with small decisions like what to do or use. Instead, we should focus on the decisions about what really matters to us, because that will influence our happiness.
And one of these important decisions is to choose friends carefully.
Why the choice of friends is so important?
One answer is: deciding is tiring. It demands energy from our brain.
Humans have a limited amount of mental energy to devote to making choices.
Choosing the clothes, the food, the time of arrival, the music to listen and what to do in our free time consumes part of the energy of our brains daily.
Thus correct choice of our friendships can help us a lot, because our brainwaves will be similar to those of the people who will spend most of our time with us. This is called “neural coupling.”
Since there will be a “neural coupling” we should think well about choosing our friends, because we will become more and more like them.
We will absorb many of their behaviors and ways they have to see the world. This absorption is independent of whether we are aware or not.
On the one hand, the consequences are always positive. Our brain will spend less brain energy if we choose the right friendships.
On the one hand, the consequences are always negative. Our brain will spend more energy if we choose the wrong friendships.
Maximize happiness and minimize stress
“It means that the people you leave with will impact your engagement with reality far beyond what you can explain. You will become equal,” says the Dr. Moran Cerf.
Thus we can state: People who want to maximize happiness and minimize stress need to build a life with fewer decisions. They need the company of people embodying the traits they prefer, forming a neural coupling.
Researchers previously suggested that this “neural coupling” is an important link in communication.
For exemple, we get so attuned to someone on the wavelength we can sometimes anticipate what the person is going to say or do.
Therefore, this contributes to a better understanding of the person and, is an evolutionary advantage at work. It means producing more and better in teamwork.
A happy life depends on minimizing decisions
According Dr. Cerf, decreasing decision-making is the secret of happiness for everyone who wants a happy life.
Many think about making the right choices. For such people is choosing the right clothes or the right places to go on vacation, for example. They think such choices will make them more satisfied.
But, more important than choosing the restaurant is knowing how to choose the people you go with, says Dr. Moran.
Thus, if people want to make improvements in life, related to reading or cooking better, what to do? Worth repeating: spend more time with someone who has these desirable positive characteristics.
Thus, all this is something we know unconsciously, but we do not practice. Scientific research is an important reminder.
