Millions of Brazilians with signs of depression
According to a National Health Survey, released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) this week, more than 11 millions of Brazilians has depression. The number corresponds to 7.6% of people aged 18 or more. Also, according to the Institute of this total only 46.6% of patients had medical care in the 12 months preceding the survey.
The psychiatrist and psychotherapist Fatima Vasconcelos said that Brazil is one of Latin American countries with higher rates when the issue is depression. Despite being regarded by many as a disease that affects the elderly, depression starts early – 9% of cases occurs between 18 to 25 years; 7.5% between 26 and 49 years; and 5.5% over 50 years.
“If the depression starts early in one’s life, more serious might be in the future and the more damage it will cause in the individual’s life. Depression is a chronic and the most common disease is not only have one life crisis. The risk of having a second crisis is 50% higher after the first. Moreover, for those with two episodes, the chance is 70% higher. ”
In addition, according to the expert, the estimate is that six out of ten patients do not seek or do not find treatment for depression – mainly because of prejudice. She points out that a person with depression suffer from mood swings, and more who wants to be right, she sees the world negatively and needs help to confront this.
“A person who is depressed, sometimes not realizes that he is sad. She works and produces less than what normal. Have memory difficulties, concentration and feel a very great uncertainty. She becomes suspicious of his own ability. Therefore, it is very important that people know that depression is a brain disease that has to be recognized and treated. ”
